Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of oriental rat flea (Xenopsylla cheopis). Practically all warm-blooded animals are fed upon by fleas. The oriental rat flea feeds primarily on rodents but sometimes feeds on man. This flea is the primary vector of plague in most large plague epidemics in Asia, Africa, and South America. Both male and female fleas can transmit the infection. The pathogen carried by fleas in the plague bacterium, Yersinia pestis. Causes bubonic plaque.
