Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Candida yeast (Candida parapsilosis). Candida species are part of the normal flora of mucous membranes of the mouth, gut and vagina. They are opportunistic fungi which may grow and become invasive if the host is immunologically compromised; steroid therapy, malnutrition, diabetes and antibiotic suppression of the normal bacterial flora are predisposing factors. Candida parapsilosis is an important non-albicans species which infects hospitalized patients. It is not an obligate human pathogen. Biofilm production by the yeast plays an important role in C. parapsilosis outbreaks. Magnification: x1, 400 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres. | |
