Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Mallomonas sp., golden alga (chrysophyte). Inorganic scales and some spines cover its surface. Mallomonas sp., golden alga synurid (chrysophyte). Inorganic silica scales and some spines cover its surface. Mallomonas is a free-living planktonic alga. It is a long spindle-shaped cell covered with scales (bluntly pointed in front and tapering to a tail of varying length at the rear). It has a flagellum that varies from about one-quarter to three-quarters of the body length. The synurids are a small group of heterokont algae, found mostly in freshwater; widespread in distribution in temporary pools, bogs, ponds, and lakes of all sizes.
