Heterotrophic, toxic, dinophysoid dinoflagellate Phalacroma rotundatum (also known as Dinophysis rotundata), coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). It is a toxic heterotrophic dinoflagellate species widely distributed in cold and warm waters. Phalacroma rotundatumis a thecate (armoured), marine planktonic, heterotrophic (non-photosynthetic) dinoflagellate. Unlike photosynthetic dinoflagellates (true algae), heterotrophic dinoflagellates (protists, protozoans) feed directly on other marine plankton. D. rotundata is a phagocytic species feeding on both aloricate and loricate ciliates by piercing the prey cell with a feeding tube. D. rotundata is a causative organism of diarrhetic shellfish poisoning (DSP). Magnification: x480 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres. | |
