Human lung epithelial cancer cell among healthy epithelial cells (epithelial tumour cell line), coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Lung cancer, also called lung carcinoma, is a malignant lung tumour. It is characterized by uncontrolled cell growth in tissues of the lung, especially lung epithelial cells. If not untreated, the cancer cells can spread beyond the lung into nearby tissue and other parts of the body. There are two main types of lung carcinomas: small-cell lung carcinoma (SCLC) and non-small-cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC). The majority of lung cancer cases (85%) are due to long-term tobacco smoking.
