Moraine deposit 3000 metres up in the Gran Paradiso National Park, northern Italy. A moraine is a deposit of rock material, which has been carried and deposited by a glacier. The material is derived from the slopes above the glacier and also scraped up from the rocks over which the glacier passes. When the glacier retreats, shrinks or vanishes the mound of material remains as evidence of a glacial history. | |
