Colostomy bag. Close-up of supplies used to affix a new colostomy bag to a patient's abdomen. A colostomy is where part of the colon (large intestine) is brought through an incision in the abdominal wall and formed into an external artificial anus called a stoma. This is then connected to a colostomy bag that collects faecal matter. A colostomy can be temporary or permanent, and is carried out when part of the colon or rectum has to be removed, often due to surgery to remove part of the bowel. Here, the pad (upper left) is cut to fit around the stoma and then stuck to the patient's abdomen. The bag (centre) is then stuck to the pad and collects the bowel contents when they are expelled from the colostomy. | |
