Scrub typhus research, 1940s. Researchers carrying out studies on the disease scrub typhus, caused by the pathogen Orientia tsutsugamushi. At left is US entomologist Cornelius Becker Philip (1900-1987), working with medical doctor Dale Jenkins at right. The pathogen is transmitted by the bite of a mite known as a chigger. They are placing chiggers obtained from specific locations (labelled on tube) onto mice to study the effects and modes of disease transmission. Two mice are seen immobilised in tube-like screen capsules as the chiggers are placed on them to bite them and feed on them. Two more mice are in the glass jar in the background. Photographed in August 1948 at the Rocky Mountain Laboratory, Hamilton, Montana, USA. | |
