Wing from a woodcock, (Scolopax rusticola), a medium-small wading bird. It has a wingspan of 55 to 65cm and a long straight bill. The intricate patterning of the wing feathers acts as camouflage for its woodland habitat. It is largely nocturnal, spending most of the daylight hours in dense forest cover. The feathers provide useful material for fly-fishing where a long narrow feather, known as a hackle, is wound around a fishing fly so that its filaments are splayed out. Young, immature feathers known as pin-feathers make watercolour brushes that are capable of producing very fine detail and were used by Victorian artists making miniaturist paintings on ivory and are still used to paint watercolours today. | |
