Great Eastern steamship. Historical poster of the SS Great Eastern passenger liner. This ship, designed by the British engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, was the largest ship in the world at her launch in 1858, being over 200 metres long. During her maiden voyage she was damaged by an explosion. After repairs, she sailed between Britain and North America before being converted to a cable-laying ship and laying the first lasting transatlantic telegraph cable in 1866. She was broken up in 1889. | |
