Maximum-minimum thermometer. 19th-century illustration of the maximum-minimum thermometer developed by British physicist Ernest Rutherford (1871-1937). His design used steel springs inside the tubes that would be moved by the liquids in the tubes as the temperature changed. The springs would lodge at the extreme positions, allowing the maximum and minimum temperatures to be measured. A mercury thermometer (top) was used for high temperatures, and an alcohol thermometer (bottom) for the low temperatures. This illustration is from 'Physique Populaire' (Emile Desbeaux, 1891). | |
