Wimshurst electrostatic generator. 19th-century illustration of the electrostatic generator developed between 1880 and 1883 by British inventor James Wimshurst (1832-1903). This model has 12 discs. It is an example of an induction generator (also called an 'influence machine'), which produces electric charge by electrostatic induction. A combination of moving plates, drums, or belts are used to redistribute electric charge. Such generators also use a high voltage and low but continuous electric current. This illustration is from 'Physique Populaire' (Emile Desbeaux, 1891). | |
