| Berthelot and thermodynamics. 19th-century illustration of the French chemist Marcellin Berthelot (1827-1907) carrying out an experiment with a bomb calorimeter. Another design of calorimeter is at left. Calorimeters are used to measure the energy produced during a chemical reaction. Berthelot carried out extensive work on such reactions, using calorimeters such as these. He published his work on thermochemistry in 'Thermochimie' (1897).
