Legend of sponges and sound recordings. 19th-century illustration of an account from 1632 related by a Captain Vosterloch while travelling in the South Pacific. He related the discovery of a people who used a type of sponge to communicate over long distances. A message spoken into the sponge would be absorbed and replayed when the sponge was squeezed correctly. This legend was published in the pamphlet 'Le Courier Veritable'. This illustration is from 'Physique Populaire' (Emile Desbeaux, 1891). | |
