Quantum computing research. Closed cryogenic dilution refrigerator which will maintain extremely low temperatures for a five-qubit superconducting quantum computing device. The temperature inside the refrigerator is coldest at the bottom where the quantum information is processed. Quantum computers, which are under development, are based on quantum mechanics and the principle of representing information using quantum properties. This has the potential to massively increase computing power. A qubit is a quantum bit. IBM scientists in Zurich, Switzerland, working with colleagues at IBM's TJ Watson Lab in New York, are building their own quantum research laboratory.
