Drew (labelled 'Charlie', upper centre) was the eldest of five children. His brother Joseph (labelled 'Joe'), was born in 1909. Elsie (right) was born in 1906. Nora (lower centre) was born in 1913. The family grew up in Washington DC, USA. Drew's dissertation in the 1930s was titled 'Banked Blood'. His work improved blood storage and blood transfusion, which helped save many lives during World War II. He was the first black surgeon to serve as an examiner on the American Board of Surgery.
