SpaceX's reusable launch system. Diagram illustrating the reusable launch system developed by SpaceX. At lower left, a Falcon rocket launches with a payload carried on a second stage above the rocket's first stage. The first stage separation is followed by fairing separation and payload deployment (typically a satellite) at top right. The sequence ending at bottom right shows the propulsive vertical landing of the first stage on a drone ship in the sea. This is preceded by stages such as: flip manoeuvre, boostback burn, entry burn, and aerodynamic guidance by grid fins. This pioneering achievement enables SpaceX to reuse their rocket stages much more rapidly than other reusable systems. The first successful landing on a droneship took place on 8 April 2016. SpaceX (Space Exploration Technologies) is a private US aerospace and space transport services company, founded in 2002. | |
