Tuberculosis radio appeal. Radio appeal being made in the USA in the 1930s for a campaign against the respiratory bacterial disease tuberculosis (TB). TB was a widespread cause of death before the use of a vaccine (from 1921) and antibiotics (from 1944). The sign refers to 376 children in a sanatorium in Washington DC. The sign and child's costume include the distinctive logo of the American Lung Association (then called the National Tuberculosis Association), founded in 1904 to campaign against tuberculosis. The logo (a double-barred cross) is a modified Cross of Lorraine. It became the official anti-TB symbol in 1920. Photographed by Harris and Ewing in March 1930. | |
