Arthur Koehler (1885-1967), US dendrologist and wood identification specialist of the US Department of Agriculture, holding a prehistoric petrified wood specimen. This piece of wood is 12 million years old, a fragment from a fossil redwood log that was found by workmen of the Reclamation Service, buried deep below the bed of the Yakima River in Washington state. The log had been petrified (fossilised) following its burial in lava flows from ancient volcanoes. Photographed by Harris and Ewing in November 1930. | |
