SS Imperator construction. Shipbuilders and scaffolding around the rudder and screws of SS Imperator, an ocean liner that was built from 1910 to 1912. The SS Imperator was operated by the Hamburg America Line, out of Hamburg, Germany. At the time of completion in June 1913, this ship was the largest passenger liner in the world. The ship had eleven decks and was 276 metres in length. It could carry 4234 passengers and a crew of 1180. The four turbine-powered propellers produced a top speed of 44 kilometres per hour. The ship was retired from service in 1938. This photograph, dating from around 1912, is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries. | |
