Kidney anatomy, illustration. Close-up view of blood vessels in the kidney, branching into capillaries in the capsules (Bowman's capsules or glomerular capsules) where filtration takes places. Within the glomeruli, urine is formed as urea and other waste products are filtered from the blood. The darker coloured areas are the renal pyramids, within an area called the renal medulla. The lighter areas are part of the renal pelvis, into which urine drains to reach the kidney's ureter (not seen). The darker red blood vessels, part of the venous system, are carrying deoxygenated blood. The brighter red blood vessels are part of the arterial system, and are carrying oxygenated blood. | |
