Pityriasis versicolor. Historical medical illustration of a case of a patient with chromophytosis, also known as pityriasis versicolor or tinea versicolor. This fungal skin infection is caused by the yeast Malassezia furfur, which is normally found on the skin without causing any problems. However, in warm humid environments it may proliferate causing light patches, scaly skin and itching. From Atlas of Venereal and Skin Diseases by Prince Albert Morrow, published in 1889. | |
