Chancroid. Historical medical illustration showing gangrenous buboes (swollen lymph nodes) in two male patients suffering from chancroid. Chancroid is an infection caused by the Haemophilus ducreyi bacterium. It causes ulcers on the skin and mucous membranes of the genitals and enlargement of the lymph nodes in the groin. In these cases the inguinal lymph nodes have swollen, resulting in large gangrenous abscesses which have ruptured through the skin.
