Like most galaxies, the Milky Way has a supermassive black hole in its core. It’s called Sagittarius A* (A-star). Scientists have established that, about 6 million years ago, Sgr A* underwent a quasar-like period of activity. Gas fell into the black hole, which flared up, creating a spherically symmetric shockwave spreading out from the galactic core. The activity is believed to have lasted about 4 to 8 million years. Two satellites of the Milky Way are also shown. | |
