William Blackstone (1723-1780), British judge, legal scholar (jurist) and politician. Blackstone was educated at Oxford. Blackstone was Vinerian Professor of English Law at the University of Oxford from 1758. One of his most famous works is 'Commentaries on the Laws of England' (1766). Other works include 'An Analysis of the Laws of England' (1756) and 'A Discourse on the Study of the Law' (1758). This artwork, from his 'Commentaries', describes Blackstone as one of the justices of the Court of Commons Pleas, a position he held from 1770 to his death. Blackstone's written works were influential, providing comprehensive overviews of English law. | |
