Pancreatic cancer desmoplasia. Fluorescence light micrograph of a desmoplastic reaction associated with pancreatic cancer. Desmoplasia is the growth of fibrous or connective tissue, and may occur around a neoplasm (cancer), causing dense fibrosis. Here, the connective tissue associated with the tumour has thickened in a similar manner to scar formation. Tests can be carried out to distinguish between 'good' and 'bad' stromal reactions. It is hoped that research will allow the design of therapies that will reprogram tumour-stromal interaction. Cancerous cells are shown in red, cell nuclei are in blue, stroma/desmoplasia is shown in cyan, and stroma-specific markers are shown in yellow and green. | |
