UNIVAC computer use. UNIVAC computer being prepared in 1959 to predict a winning horse. The Universal Automatic Computer (UNIVAC I) was the first commercial computer made in the US. It was sold to the United States Census Bureau on 31 March 1951,and delivered and installed the next year. The price was USD 159,000,It was designed by J. Presper Eckert and John Mauchly,and was built by the Remington Rand company. Data and programs were input using magnetic tape drives and the results processed by the operators.
