Model of Bell's telephone of 1875. The display plate states that this is a duplicate of the instrument through which speech sounds were first transmitted electrically,1875. This was the prototype telephone constructed by Alexander Graham Bell in 1875. It consisted of a coil of wire,a magnetic arm and a taut membrane. Any sound causes the membrane, and hence the magnetic arm,to vibrate. The movement of the magnet induced a fluctuating electric current in the coil, and this electrical signal was reconverted into sound by an identical apparatus at the other end of the circuit.
