Seaweed farming. Seaweed being farmed along the coast of Zanzibar,Tanzania. Seaweed is a type of marine algae. In the 1980s it was introduced as a crop into Zanzibar from the Philippines, where it grows in the shallow warm waters. As much as 15,000 tonnes has been exported,at a value of 8m USD per year,to be used in toothpaste, cosmetics, lotions and as food. However,in recent years the crop is failing due to rising sea temperatures and the appearance of a new damaging bacteri, both caused by climate change. Photographed in Jambiani,Zanzibar,Tanzania |
