Apollo 11 landing sites. Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) image of the original and actual landing sites for the Apollo 11 mission, the first to land humans on the Moon. As the Apollo 11 Lunar Module (LM),named Eagle, neared the surface, the module's pilot Neil Armstrong saw that the designated landing area (near West Crater, right) was too rocky. He changed the flight plan and flew 'Eagle' westward to find a safe landing spot (far left). He landed 'Eagle' at 20:18 UTC on 20 July 1969 at what became known as Tranquility Base. This image is 742 metres wide. North is towards top. This image, obtained by the orbiting LRO spacecraft that entered lunar orbit in June 2009,was published in November 2009 | |
