Trumpler 14 star cluster,Hubble Space Telescope (HST) image. This huge star-formation region is 8000 light years from Earth in the Carina Nebula,in the constellation of Carina. This cluster, because it is only 500,000 years old,has one of the highest concentrations of massive, luminous stars in the entire Milky Way. The stars will explode as supernovae in just a few million years. Their stellar winds and supernova blast waves will carve out cavities in the surrounding nebula, starting new cycles of star birth and death. This image was obtained in 2005 and 2006 with the HST's Wide Field Camera (WFC) and Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS),combining blue, visible, and infrared filters,as well as filters for hydrogen and nitrogen emissions |
