Andromeda Galaxy (M31),optical image. Wide-field view of the Andromeda Galaxy,the nearest large galaxy to our own. It is around 140,000 light years across,and located 2.5 million light years away in the constellation of the same name. This image uses data from the Burrell Schmidt telescope of the Warner and Swansey Observatory on Kitt Peak in Arizona,USA. Additional detail of the core (red box) and dust in the spiral arms was added from images obtained by astrophotographer Vicent Peris. This combined optical image uses red,green,and blue to show different bands from the visible light portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. Image published in 2013 | |
