Strontium optical lattice clock research. A researcher aligns a laser beam in research on a new generation of atomic clocks applying optical lattice technology. Inside a strontium clock is an ion trap, where strontium ions oscillate between two energy levels in response to the light of a laser beam. Counting such oscillations is the basis for defining the standard second. Strontium optical clocks are faster and more accurate than earlier atomic clocks.
