Researcher monitoring a dual alkali caesium and rubidium atomic fountain clock. This atomic clock uses a caesium and rubidium 'fountain' to measure the exact length of one second. The fountain contains atoms that oscillate between two energy levels at high speed. Counting such oscillations is the basis for defining the standard second. Being extremely stable and accurate, this clock is a major contributor to the international definition of the second, and the defining of TAI (International Atomic Time) and UTC (Coordinated Universal Time).
