Cro-Magnon fossil skull endocast. This is the endocast of the Cro-Magnon 1 fossil skull, produced using 3D scans. The skull,of an elderly male from around 28,000 years ago,was found in the Dordogne in southern France in 1868. Cro-Magnons were an early European culture of modern humans (Homo sapiens sapiens). This 2010 study (by Balzeau and Grimaud-Herve) found that the specimen's brain was around a fifth larger than human brains today.
