Male moose or elk (Alces alces) scenting the air. Bull moose are usually solitary, and rely on smell and hearing to locate females during the mating season in September and October. The antlers of the male moose are the largest of all the deer family, some measuring 2 metres from tip to tip. Males also have a dewlap (loose fold of skin) hanging beneath their chins. Moose live in forests, bogs and marshes in the higher latitudes of the northern hemisphere. They feed on shoots and aquatic plants. Photographed in Wyoming,USA | |
