Burchell's zebras. Herd of Burchell's zebras (Equus burchelli burchelli) by a river. Burchell's zebra is a wild horse which inhabits the grassy plains of eastern and southern Africa. It lives in herds of several hundred individuals, eating grass, leaves and shoots. It is an important prey animal for large carnivores such as lions, although it can outrun such predators over long distances, and resists violently if caught. It also keeps in a close-knit group when fleeing from predators. Its stripes are a form of cryptic colouration which makes it difficult for a predator to target one animal amongst a herd | |
