African hunting dogs (Lycaon pictus). Lycaon pictus, means painted or ornate wolf. This refers to the fur patterns of brown, red, black and yellow, which are unique to each individual. African hunting dogs are highly social pack hunters. They co-operate to raise young and care for their sick or wounded. They hunt mammals twice their size, such as antelope, and can give chase for several kilometres (km) at speeds of up to 55 km per hour. Each pack is led by an alpha male and female, who normally prevent subordinate members from breeding. African hunting dogs are endangered | |
