Giant panda. Giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) eating bamboo. This sitting position allows the panda to tear off shoots and bring them to its mouth with its forefeet. The giant panda inhabits mountain forests in southern central China. It may venture as high as 4000 metres,but descends to lower-lying regions in winter. The giant panda eats shoots and leaves,mainly of bamboo,which is abundant in its habitat. It is omnivorous,however,and will also take fish,insects and small rodents.
