Giant panda. Giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) in a tree. The giant panda inhabits mountain forests in southern central China. It may venture as high as 4000 metres,but descends to lower- lying regions in winter. The giant panda eats shoots and leaves,mainly of bamboo,which is abundant in its habitat. It is omnivorous,however,and will also take fish,insects and small rodents. The giant panda is active from dusk until dawn,and eats for most of its waking life. It is a solitary animal,meeting other pandas only to mate. Giant pandas do not make a den,but sleep in hollow trees or rock crevices
