Flying squirrel. Flying squirrel (Glaucomys volans) leaping from its nest hole. This arboreal rodent cannot actually fly,but glides from tree to tree on the folds of skin between its front and back legs. It is native to the forests of the central and eastern USA and parts of Central America. It is nocturnal,emerging at night to feed on a varied diet including fruit,leaves,insects,eggs and small animals. It is a solitary animal,meeting others only to mate. Photographed in Ohio,USA | |
