Snow monkeys. Japanese snow monkeys (Macaca fuscata) bathing in a hot spring. These have the northernmost range of any monkeys, inhabiting the islands of Japan. In winter it can fall to -5 degrees Celsius, and the monkeys warm themselves by bathing in hot springs as seen here. They usually live in groups of around 100 individuals, although much smaller and much larger groups have been known. The groups occupy territories in which they roam around hunting for leaves and ripe fruits. In the winter, they resort to eating buds and even tree bark. Groups have a strict social hierarchy, and are led by adult males. Photo- graphed in the Shiga Highlands,Japan | |
