Eastern grey kangaroo (Macropus giganteus) mother and joey. These marsupials live in the woodlands and grasslands of eastern Australia. As marsupials they give birth to an under-developed young that develops in the mother's pouch. The young (joey) will feed on its mother's milk for some 300 days, and even after leaving the pouch will often return for protection or milk. The adults feed on vegetation, may reach heights of nearly 2 metres, and can live for nearly 20 years. The large hind legs allow kangaroos to move with great speed in a bounding motion. They live in small social groups, and are most active at night and at dusk and dawn | |
