Red-necked wallabies. Female red-necked wallaby (Macropus rufogriseus) with her baby in her pouch. One young is born to a breeding female red-necked wallaby after a gestation period of 30 days. The young is born in a very underdeveloped state, and spends the next 280 days in the safety of its mother's pouch. After leaving the pouch the young continues to suckle until it is 12-17 months old. Red-necked wallabies are found in the coastal forests of eastern and south-eastern Australia. They are herbivorous, feeding on grasses and herbs. Although they are usually solitary, they often form groups for foraging. Photographed on Kangaroo Island,Australia | |
