Red kangaroos. Male (right) and female red kangaroos (Macropus rufus,or Megaleia rufa) by a watering hole. The female is drinking. Males often have this deep red colour, with females a pale grey, but their colouration varies widely over their range. Red kangaroos are the largest marsupials, primitive mammals which give birth to underdeveloped young which are then reared in a pouch. They live in large groups (or mobs) throughout the arid grasslands of Australia. They eat grass and other low plants. They are usually active in the evening and during the night, especially in hot weather. Photographed at dusk in Thrushton National Park,Queensland,Australia | |
