Virginia opossum. Young Virginia opossum (Didelphis virginiana) hanging using its prehensile (grasping) tail. About seven young are produced in each litter, once or twice a year. After only 12-13 days they leave the uterus and clamber into their mother's pouch. For the next 100 days they are carried on their mother's back. The Virginia opossum is the only marsupial found in the USA. It is most commonly found in moist forest and bushy areas in North and Central America. It is omnivorous, mainly eating small vertebrates, insects and fruits. Virginia opossums are solitary and nocturnal. Photographed in Hamilton County,Ohio,USA | |
