Black skimmer (Rhynchops niger) in flight with a fish in its bill. This seabird inhabits coastal regions on both the Atlantic and Pacific sides of the Americas, including the Caribbean Sea. Its range extends to southern Canada in the east, but less far north on the west coast. It takes its name from its method of feeding. It flies low over the water's surface, running the bottom half of its bill through the water. When it contacts a fish it snaps its bill shut. The black skimmer may reach a length of nearly 50 centimetres. Photographed in Corson's Inlet State Park,New Jersey,USA | |
