Sandhill cranes. Aerial photograph of a huge flock of sandhill cranes (Grus canadensis) in a river during their mass migration. These birds live around wetlands throughout North America and parts of Siberia,Russia. They breed in the northern areas and spend the winter in the more southern parts of the range,as far south as Mexico. They eat mainly plant matter,although amphibians,small mammals and fish are also taken when available. The sandhill crane may reach a length of around one metre,with a wingspan of up to two metres.
