Peacock (Pavo cristatus) displaying. The peacock (male blue peafowl) shows off his train to attract a mate. The train is not the tail of the bird,instead being formed from modified feathers on his lower back. The female (peahen) lacks a train,and the male only has one during the breeding season. The train comprises over 100 feathers decorated with iridescent eyespots. The blue peafowl inhabits forests and forest edges in India and Sri Lanka. It roosts in trees,but spends most of its time on the ground,hunting insects,rodents and other small animals,and also feeding on vegetation.
