Elf owl in nest. View of an elf owl (Micrathene whitneyi) peering out of its nest hole in a saguaro cactus (Carnegiea gigantea). Elf owls are the world's smallest owls, reaching a maximum length of just 15 centimetres. They live in deserts in southern North America, and often nest in holes in cacti bored by woodpeckers. They are mainly nocturnal birds, spending the day in their nests. Their main prey are insects such as hawk moths and beetles, although they occasionally tackle small mammals.
